 NeuroSky Technology

  1. Brainwaves

The last century of neuroscience research has greatly increased our knowledge about the brain and particularly, the electrical signals emitted by neurons firing in the brain. The patterns and frequencies of these electrical signals can be measured by placing a sensor on the scalp. The Mind Tools line of headset products contain Neurosky Think Gear technology, which quantify the analog electrical signals, commonly referred to as brainwaves, and exercise them into digital signals. The Think Gear technology then makes those computations and signals available to games and applications. The Table I give a general synopsis of some of the commonly- identified frequencies that tend to be generated by different types of activity in the brain.

  1.  ThinkGear

ThinkGear is the technology inside every NeuroSky product or partner product that empowers a device to interface with the wearers’ brainwaves. It includes the sensor that touches the forehead, the contact and reference points located in the ear clip, and the on-board chip that processes all of the data. Both the raw brainwaves and the eSense Meters are computed on the ThinkGear chip.

Table1. Frequencies Generated By Different Types of Activities in the Brain

  1.  eSense

eSense is a NeuroSky's proprietary algorithm for representing mental states. To calculate eSense, the NeuroSky ThinkGear technology intensifies the raw brainwave signal and removes the ambient noise and muscle movement. The eSense algorithm is then applied to the remaining signal, resulting in explicated eSense meter values. Please note that eSense meter values do not interpret an exact number, but instead describe ranges of activity. The eSense meters are a way to show how effectively the user is captivating Attention (similar to concentration) or Meditation (similar to relaxation).

(a)Attention eSense:

The eSense Attention meter shows the intensity of a user's level of mental “focus” or “attention”, such as that which occurs during intense concentration and directed (but stable) mental activity. Its value ranges from 0 to 100. Distractions, wandering thoughts, lack of focus, or anxiety may lower the attention meter level.

(b)Meditation eSense:

The eSense Meditation meter shows the level of a user's mental “calmness” or “relaxation”. Its value ranges from 0 to 100. Note that Meditation is a measure of a person's mental states, not physical levels, so simply relaxing all the muscles of the body may not instantly result in an intensified effect meditation level. However, for most people in most normal circumstances, relaxing the body often helps the mind to relax as well. Meditation is related to reduce activity by the active mental processes in the brain. It has long been an observed that closing one's eyes turns of the mental activities which process images from the eyes. So closing the eyes is often an effective method for increasing the Meditation meter level. Distractions, wandering thoughts, anxiety, agitation, and sensory stimuli may lower the Meditation meter levels.

  1. eSense Meter:

Technical Description For each different type of eSense (i.e. Attention, Meditation), the meter value is reported on a relative eSense scale of 1 to 100. On this scale, a value between 40 to 60 at any given moment in time is considered “neutral” and is similar in notion to “baselines” that are established in conventional brainwave measurement techniques (though the method for determining a ThinkGear baseline is proprietary and may differ from conventional brainwaves).

A value from 60 to 80 is considered “slightly elevated”, and may be interpreted as levels tending to be higher than normal (levels of Attention or Meditation that may be higher than normal for a given person). Values from 80 to 100 are considered “elevated”, meaning they are strongly indicative of heightened levels of that eSense. Similarly, on the other end of the scale, a value Between 20 to 40 indicates “reduced” levels of the eSense, while a value Between 1 to 20 indicates “strongly lowered” levels of the eSense. These levels may indicate states of interruption, agitation, or abnormality, according to the opposite of each eSense.

The reason for the somewhat wide ranges for each interpretation is that some parts of the eSense algorithm are dynamically learning and at times employ some “slow-adaptive” algorithms to adjust to natural fluctuations and trends of each user, accounting for and compensating for the fact that brainwaves in the human brain are subject to normal ranges of variance and fluctuation. This is part of the reason why ThinkGear sensors are able to operate on a wide range of individuals under an extremely wide range of personal and environmental conditions, while still giving good accuracy and reliability.

 Introduction:

In this modern age we are mostly dependent on machines than ever before in our lives. Robotics is a current emerging technology in the field of science. A number of Universities in world are working in this field. These days many types of wireless robots are being developed and are put to varied applications and uses. The purpose of this project is to develop a robotic arm, which is operated & controlled wirelessly with the help of Neurosky Headset which transmits signals to the robotic arm through an arduino rather than controlled it manually through a conventional remote controller. The Robot moves and acts in the manner depending on the brain signals judged by the Neurosky Headset. The robot moves in up, down, left or right directions and picks up objects from one place and keeps at another desired place as directed by the brain signals which is wirelessly controlled through Bluetooth devices.

Our project consists of two different parts. First one is the mechanical structure for the Robotic arm and other one is the Neurosky headset which operates the Robotic arm. The Robotic arm consists of servo motors which interfaced with Arduino and Bluetooth.

1.2 Robotic Arm:

Robotic arm is a mechanical arm which is usually programmable with having similar function as a human arm. It consist of many servo motors or any other of this type.

Development Of Robotics:

It is a new branch of engineering. It contains different fields of engineering. Different branches occupied are:-

  1. Mechanical Engineering: It is because of the structure of the Robots and the machines.

  2. Electrical Engineering: It is because robot uses electronics for controlling and intelligence.

  3. Computer Engineering: It is because of the observation process and it deals with the development of movement.

Classification of Robots:

Its categories are made by looking at the circuits and the applications. There are three categories of robots.

  • Simple robots:

These do not contain any complex circuit and are basically helps the humans in work. For example a washing machine is also a robot which is automatic machine.

  • Middle Robots:

These are those robots which are once programmed then they can never be programmed again. They can perform many tasks and they contain sensors. For example is automatic washing machine.

  • Complex Robots:

They can be programmed many times. They have complex circuits for example laptops and computers.

1.4 Applications of Robots:

  • Outer Space :

Robots used in space.

  • The Intelligent Home :

These robots help the people to enjoy home appliances. Like door and windows can be opened and closed automatically. Lights and other electronic appliances can be turned off and on automatically.

  • Exploration :

These can go in areas which are injurious to humans.

  • Military Robots :

These are like drones and are very helpful.

  • Farms :

These can be used in farms to collect crops.

  • The Car Industry :

These are used in assembling procedures.

In this modern age, we are mostly dependent on machines than ever before in our lives. In this report we are developing the Robotic arm, which is controlled wirelessly with the help of Neurosky Headset. The project is made in two parts. One is Robotic arm having 5 servo motors used as a receiver and the other one is a Neurosky headset which obtains brain signals i.e alpha, beta, gamma, theta etc which is interfaced with Arduino. Bluetooth device is used on transmitting and receiving end. Each motor is moved by different angles with brain signals.

EEG signals can be collected with electrodes that are placed on the surface of the scalp. The most widely used electrodes are silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) because they have low cost, low contact impedance, and relatively good stability. Furthermore, there are rather mature commercialized acquisition systems including the amplifier and EEG cap with integrated Ag/AgCl electrodes, which have been successfully applied in scientific research and clinical diagnosis. However, using Ag/AgCl electrodes requires removing outer skin layer and filling gel between electrodes and scalp (and thus, this kind of electrodes is also called “wet” electrodes). These operations take long time and are uncomfortable to users. To address these limitations of “wet” electrodes, some researchers have been exploring “dry” electrodes, which do not need to use gel and skin cleaning. The main disadvantage of existing dry electrodes is that the acquired EEG signals are worse than those acquired with conventional electrodes due to the increase of contact impedance. Some companies (such as Quasar, Emotiv Systems Inc., and NeuroSky Inc.) have been commercializing acquisition systems based on dry electrodes. Here we are using NeuroSky Brainwave headset. However, they are not yet mature, and some researchers have doubts about what physiological signals these systems actually acquire. Therefore, until now, all brain-controlled wheelchairs adopt “wet” electrodes to collect brain signals.

A magazine written by Imam Ali Raza (AS) ibn Imam Musa Kazim (AS) ibn Imam Jafar Sadiq (AS) ibn Imam Baiq (AS) ibn Imam Zain ul Abideen (AS) ibn Imam Hussain (AS) ibn Imam Maula Ali (AS) & daughter of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) regarding health on the request of the King.

O king, remember that sleep rules the mind and the strength of the body depends on it.  Just when the king intends to sleep, first lie down on his left side, then change to his right, and so on. Even when he woke up, he woke up from the right crotch on which he was lying. And make it a habit to get up early in the morning just as you have a habit of going to bed early at night.

Especially when there are two hours left in the night, you should get up and go to the toilet and don't be ashamed of it too much as it causes hemorrhoids.

The successful religion of Islam is the natural religion which with its arrival brought about a revolution in the ideas of the Eastern countries. And it managed to get this lost man back to his rightful destination by reasonably presenting the healthy ideas of nature. The evolution of the soul has given rise to the lofty idea of eternal life, which has benefited the followers of Islam.

It highlighted the good morals, truthfulness of self, purity, and purity of soul. Due to which the recitation of the Holy Quran in misfortunes & pains - health and disease and through prayers, the demand for the mercy of God (Allah) was given high priority over material medicine. Islam laid down important principles of hygiene, exercise - purity and sophistication - for the heights of the soul. It identified healthy foods in the diet. It highlighted the effects of every good diet. Explained the need for seasonal foods in each season, which are essential for survival in accordance with the climatic conditions. It described Zakat, Charity & Fitrah as a means of repelling calls and a means of avoiding the atmosphere.

Thus, in the time of the Prophet and the Imams, the attention from material medicine was completely diverted and the followers of Islam turned their attention to spiritual evolution with full fervor. Fasting, Prayer, Hajj, Zakat, Charity (Sadqah) and Fitrah have been adopted by the members of the Islamic community with sincerity and sincerity of heart, and it is through them that Muslims have achieved not only spiritual but also physical and material evolution.

There is no sign in the history of the world of an outbreak of an epidemic in Muslim settlements during the entire period of the Prophet's (PBUH) mission.

Exercise - Arts - Spyware.  Muslims kept their society healthy by adopting the correct ways of taking a nap, etc., the distribution of work and rest and the principles of nature. And work hard on these principles.

Imams (peace be upon them).
From time to time they continued to guide the people with their valuable and wise advices. Therefore, apart from all the wise sayings which are preserved in the field of Islamic medicine, the most important incident is that once Caliph Mamun Al-Rashid complained to Hazrat Imam Ali Ibn Musa Al-Reza that whenever I (Caliph) went out of my capital Tous  If so, water from other places has a bad effect on my health.  The Imam (AS) advised that the vessel in which the water of Tous goes with it should not be allowed to empty, but when a little water is left in it and the water of this particular place is mixed in it. The effects will last until the end of time. Although why not mix water from fifty different places.

It was a comprehensive and pure medical theory which the Muslims who were familiar with the status of the Imam certainly paid attention to but didn’t research on it. But this alchemy was first tested in 1790 by the great German physician Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, and revolutionized the world of medicine. He invented the equivalent treatment (Homoeopathic). At present, this treatment is going on very successfully.

Allah Almighty has made fasting obligatory on Muslims.

Surah #02 | Ayat #183 & 184

O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous - [Fasting for] a limited number of days.

While this verse indicates the necessity of fasting, it also shows that this phrase was not only specific to Islam but was also found in the earlier nations. According to some traditions, even in the most ignorant days, they used to fast as a form of worship. According to Sahih Bukhari, in the time of Jahiliyyah, the Quraysh used to fast on the tenth of Muharram. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had given the knowledge of fasting during the day at the very beginning of his career. When Allah allowed the fast of Ramadan to be observed on that Muharram and said: Whoever wants to fast should do so and whoever wants to miss so should leave. Since the 10th of Muharram is the day of martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), his children and his martyred companions, the Shia (Asna Ashriya) have now made the fast of this day undesirable and shitty. It is not surprising that the traditions of the virtues of Ashura have been fabricated by the Umayyads from the very beginning to diminish the importance of the rise of Imam Hussain (AS).

In the above verse, a few days of counting means the time of Ramadan or the following verse shows that Ramadan is the month in which the Qur'an was revealed.

Surah: 2 | Ayat: 185

The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.
Some people also say that a few days means three days of every month.  But those who say so are also convinced that it was abrogated by the knowledge of fasting in the short month of Ramadan. The above verse does not explain what is meant by fasting and how many times fasting is obligatory.  Nor is it clear what is permissible and what is not permissible for a fasting person. The details of these matters have been narrated by the Holy Prophet (SAWW). The Qur'an only knows about the sick and the traveler who are not allowed to fast and it is said that the traveler should make up the fast on his return from his journey. From the obvious verse, it is possible that it is obligatory to look after the patient and the traveler, because Allah has commanded us to break the fast only during the journey and in turn. This is the opinion of many Companions and others, including Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Ibn Abbas, Hazrat Ibn Umar and Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair. The belief of Shia’s in following their pure Imams is same. When Hazrat Umar was asked about the fast of the traveler, he said: If you give something to someone and he return, will you not get angry?  This is the religion of Allah. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf said: Fasting while traveling is like not fasting in the head. It is narrated from Imam Ja'far Sadiq (AS) that if a person dies while traveling and he is fasting, then I will not offer his funeral prayers.
Allah says

Surah: 2 | Ayat: 184

[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers excess - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.

This verse is about those who are able to fast but do not fast at all. They should give food to a poor person at the end of every fast. That is, they can choose between the day and the stream. But in the sight of Allah, fasting is better than giving food. If this meaning of the verse is taken, then this knowledge will be considered to be abrogated from the second verse of Surah Baqarah:  Baqarah: verse 1) Regarding this verse, Ali ibn Abiramoon said: It is about the person who falls in love during the month and gets well after that.  If he makes up the missed fasts of the next Ramadan, he will have to make up the missed fasts, and he will have to give food to the poor because he did not fulfill this obligation without any excuse. According to the four religions of Ahl e Sunnah, if a person travels with all the conditions of a Shari'ah journey, he has the option of fasting and breaking the fast even if he wants to. They base their opinion on the hadiths which state that some of the companions of the Holy Prophet used to fast during their travels and some didn’t. In addition, he says: "Not fasting is for the convenience of the traveler and it can only be justified."
